Satchmo Summer Festival
July 30 - August 2, 2009
Come Celebrate the life of Louis Armstrong with a fun-filled weekend of activities and music including: Traditional Jazz, Contemporary Jazz, and a Brass Band; plus Children's programming as well as all of our speaker seminars with nationally renowned speakers.
Louis Armstrong was born on August 4th, 1901, but he always insisted that his birthday was July 4th ,1900. He must have believed that it made a better story. He was born into a very poor family and grew up in the back of town area of uptown New Orleans. He was a bit of a hooligan in his early days, firing a celebratory shot on New Years Eve when he was twelve. This incident led to him being sent to the New Orleans Home for Colored Waifs, and strangely to his first music teacher, Professor Peter Davis. He tried his hand at percussion and the bugle, but eventually took to the cornet. Under professor Davis's instruction, the young Armstrong learned traditional marches and rags.
Louis Armstrong often ended his letters and notes with "Red beans and ricely yours," refering to one of New Orleans famous dishes, the Monday favorite, red beans and rice. In keeping with that theme, Red Bean Alley, has been set up near the stages where vending booths from local restaurants will be serving up portions of red beans and rice, along with jambalaya, crawfish cakes, gumbo and other local dishes. Some restaurants also have related menus.
